AfC statement on the High Court in London ruling that women from Northern Ireland are not entitled to free abortions on the NHS in England.

Alliance for Choice has congratulated the mother and daughter who took the UK government to court for forcing them to pay for an abortion which would have been freely available in England, Scotland or Wales for their bravery in standing up for women’s rights.  A spokesperson said “the situation this mother and daughter found themselves in is not uncommon – having too little money available to pay for travel and the procedure and so watching the pregnancy advance while becoming ever more desperate.
“They were lucky because they found the Abortion Support Network who helped them to pay for the abortion and to find cheaper flights. But why are women from here who pay the same taxes and able to get other health care in Britain not able to get abortions on the NHS? It is not enough for our politicians to say “because we don’t let them do it here”. This is a cop-out. Women from NI have abortions every day of the week, either in England or here in NI where hundreds of women every year break the law to cause their own abortions through the use of pills bought on the internet.
“The fact that women are treated like this by our politicians, who seem quite happy for us to break the law rather than provide a law to meet women’s healthcare needs, tells us that they do not value women in the way they do the male part of their electorate. It is now over a year since over 100 women (and some men) signed an open letter admitting to taking the abortion pill or of aiding and abetting a woman to take it. None of the signatories have been contacted by the police – or by anyone apart from the media. This says a lot about the approach to abortion here: “ignore it and hope it will go away”.
It is understood that the mother and daughter are to appeal the decision to the Court of Appeal and onwards. Alliance for Choice hope that their appeal is successful and that discrimination against women from here will end.

"The Only Moral Abortion is My Abortion" - When the Anti-Choice Choose

vachinas:

"We have anti-choice women in for abortions all the time. Many of them are just naive and ignorant until they find themselves with an unwanted pregnancy. Many of them are not malicious. They just haven’t given it the proper amount of thought until it completely affects them. They can be judgmental about their friends, family, and other women. Then suddenly they become pregnant. Suddenly they see the truth. That it should only be their own choice. Unfortunately, many also think that somehow they are different than everyone else and they deserve to have an abortion, while no one else does." (Physician, Washington State)

16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence Campaign

“Silence was a natural modus operandi for most women in Northern Ireland.  Speaking out didn’t just endanger your life and your situation, it endangered any of your close friends and your family.  So there is a learned silence, and the silence is learned from violence.  I can’t think of many more violent things, apart from being actually killed, than to forcibly be made to give birth or be pregnant.  But thats what women do in a traditional society and thats the kind of silence that we are having to deal with.”         – Emma Campbell, Alliance for Choice NI

Monday 25th November is International Day for Elimination of Violence Against Women. If you have been online at all, you may have noticed the quote above being shared on Facebook and Twitter in commemoration of this date.  It is transcribed from a radio show entitled ‘Struggling with Silence: Stories of Abortion Support and Alliance’ that broadcast earlier this month across Derry and London and streamed online from Resonance FM.  It is one of 16 quotes from pro-choice activists that are being shared, a new one each day, between 25th November and 10th December coinciding with 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence Campaign. Through this initiative, Alliance for Choice aims to highlight the many forms of gender violence committed by withholding access to safe and legal abortion in Northern Ireland.  These 16 quotes illustrate 16 reasons (yet there are so many more) to support the extension of the 1967 Abortion Act to Northern Ireland.
